Canelo Alvarez knows who will be the next Mexican idol when he retires from the ring

At 34 years of age, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez knows that his retirement from boxing is getting closer and closer and therefore he only fights twice a year. However, the Mexican is aware of this situation and has stated who will be the next idol of Mexico when he decides to hang up his gloves. As a clue, he is a recent Olympic medalist at the last Paris 2024 Games.

This is Marco Verde, a boxer from Mazatlan, who in his time in boxing won the silver medal in the 71-kilogram division and it was undoubtedly the right moment to move on to professional boxing. Now, the Sinaloan boxer is part of the “Canelo Team” to lead him towards his first fights and to carve out a path of success like the one achieved by the fighter from Guadalajara in his 14 years of professional career.

Marco Verde’s professional boxing debut

Being a protege of the “Canelo Team” has its benefits and one of them is that Canelo Alvarez will soon return to the ring and it will be on Saturday, May 3 in Saudi Arabia when he makes his debut against his compatriot Michel “El Aguila” Polina. This first professional fight could be decisive to confirm the expectations that have been generated around him and reinforce the confidence that Alvarez has placed in his talent.

“There’s a lot of young fighters out there, but the most likely right now is Marco Verde. This kid is going to be one of the best emerging fighters in Mexico. I have no doubt, I have worked with him, he has told me about his desire to succeed and I have seen a unique discipline. He has a lot of potential and that’s what we’re here for,” Canelo said in an interview with Fight Hype.

Who is Canelo Alvarez’s next opponent?

Canelo Alvarez will defend his WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight title against William Scull as the main fight. Thanks to his contract with DAZN and the Saudi promoters, this event will take place at the Riyah Arena in Saudi Arabia, with the prize money exceeding (in figures to be confirmed) those obtained in Las Vegas, Nevada.

On the same card, Marco Verde will step into the ring in one of the preliminary fights where, in the words of Canelo Alvarez himself, he has the height and reach to keep his opponents at bay. He has power in each of his punches and is increasingly acquiring better skills to develop in the ring. The great work done in amateur boxing can be transferred to professionalism.
