There are many traditions in boxing that span the course of the sport’s history, but there’s one that’s been developing for a while: Is it Cinco de Mayo weekend? Then Canelo Alvarez is fighting. The prideful Mexican superstar makes sure to schedule his bouts to line up with Cinco de Mayo. In each of the last four years, Alvarez has fought on that weekend.

This year will be no different, as everything is set for Alvarez to fight William Scull in a long-awaited bout on May 3 in Saudi Arabia. While Alvarez would love to take full ownership of the boxing spotlight for that whole weekend, he will have plenty of company. Perhaps the most interesting development is Naoya Inoue returning to the United States to fight Ramon Cardenas on that Sunday in Las Vegas, according to BoxingScene.

Inoue’s fight against Cardenas will be his first in the U.S. since he knocked out Michael DasmariƱas in June of 2021. That bout was also in Vegas.

Canelo, Naoya Inoue, Ryan Garcia Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez to fight during same weekend in May

Inoue has fought eight times since then, winning all eight by stoppage and doing so in his native country of Japan. It seems that Inoue is trying to expand his global audience and make more of a name for himself outside of boxing purists.

Before Alvarez and Inoue even set foot in the ring, Cinco de Mayo weekend will get off to an incredible start on Friday night. It was just announced that Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez will all be fighting on the same card in Times Square.

All three will be fighting different opponents. Boxing fans can’t ask for anything more out of a weekend. May 2 can’t come soon enough.
