Canelo Alvarez chose William Scull for this ‘justified’ reason, Eddie Hearn reveals plot

Once again, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has decided to think about profits rather than boxing, and the recent decision of the opponent he will face in his next fight has an explanation that can only be understood in the medium term. By winning in Riyadh on May 3 against Cuban William Scull, he would once again become undisputed after regaining the International Boxing Federation belt.

Canelo could be undisputed again

This was announced by promoter Eddie Hearn to FightHub TV, who also spoke about the increasingly tangible possibility that the long-awaited fight between the Jalisco native and Terence Crawford will finally take place once Canelo regains possession of the four belts and thus put more salt, more pepper and more dollars to an eventual fight that would be profitable for all parties involved.

Hearn said specifically: “I think one of the problems around the whole situation was that the fight with Crawford was agreed, but there wasn’t one agreed for May, and Canelo wanted to fight in May. There weren’t many options, but by beating Scull you can become undisputed.”

Scull, Canelo’s ‘wild card’

Regardless of the fact that the eventual fight itself has obvious sporting appeal, as Crawford could win three belts, it is useless to deny that there is also a great deal of money to be made, as this has become the main driving force behind boxing today, a reality that people like Canelo have not been able or willing to avoid.

It should be remembered that Scull was the mandatory challenger for the Mexican before his fight with Edgar Berlanga, but he stepped aside to facilitate that process, at the risk of being stripped of the belt that is now back on the line, as he regained it by unanimous decision over Vladimir Shishkin in October, taking his record to 23 wins, nine by knockout and zero defeats.
