Canelo Alvarez at a crossroads: “He will look for the rematch for money and if not, he may retire”

Canelo Alvarez’s surprising defeat at the hands of Terence Crawford has shaken the boxing world, leaving the Mexican icon at a crossroads. After losing his belts in a performance that left many perplexed, the Mexican’s future is now the subject of debate among experts and fans alike. The statements of renowned trainer Robert Garcia shed light on a possible path, one marked by revenge or retirement.

The fight was so impactful that to this day it continues to be a topic of conversation, not only because of what happened in the ring that day, but also about the future, especially Canelo’s, who after losing will have the option to reinvent himself or think about retirement.

Robert Garcia’s analysis

Garcia, with his vast experience in the sport, did not hesitate to express his concern about Canelo’s lack of adaptation during the fight, in conversation with Boxing Scene. “He didn’t even try,” he lamented, pointing to an apparent lack of competitive hunger.

“He never changed the game plan, he never tried anything different. He always kept the same pace. Even losing, he was still looking for that left to the body without, you know, from a distance, opening up, keeping his chin up,” Garcia added.

An uncertain future for Canelo

Garcia’s perspective is clear and pragmatic: Canelo will look for the only option that seems worthwhile at this stage of his career. “He’s just going to look for that big fight, the rematch if he can,” he said, “because it generates a lot of money.” If that plan does not materialize, the outlook becomes even more uncertain. “And if not, maybe he’ll retire,” the trainer said, suggesting that Canelo’s legacy may have reached its peak.

With Crawford in no hurry to decide and the division filling up with new challengers, time has become Canelo’s biggest adversary. The question is not only whether he will fight again, but whether his motivation is glory or, as Garcia suggests, money, which would mark the end of a golden chapter in his career.
