Can the Chiefs’ 2025 draft class fix their Super Bowl issues?

The Kansas City Chiefs entered the 2025 NFL Draft with plenty to fix after a humbling loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. Philadelphia exposed major gaps in Kansas City’s roster, particularly in the trenches and at wide receiver. In response, the Chiefs assembled a well-balanced draft class that addressed immediate needs while also laying groundwork for the future.

With their first-round pick, the Chiefs selected offensive tackle Josh Simmons, a talented yet recovering prospect from a season-ending knee injury. Though Simmons may not see the field until midseason, Kansas City is in no rush. They signed Jaylon Moore in free agency and plan to be patient with Simmons, mirroring the long-term approach they once took with Patrick Mahomes. If healthy, Simmons could become a cornerstone at left tackle.

A surprising pick could become a defensive star

In the second round, Kansas City raised eyebrows by selecting Omarr Norman-Lott, a quick interior pass rusher from Tennessee. While some analysts considered the pick a reach, scouts have raved about Norman-Lott’s explosiveness. Several teams viewed him as the top interior pass rusher in the draft. Despite limited size, his skillset fits perfectly alongside Chris Jones, giving the Chiefs a potential one-two punch up front.

Mid-round defense and WR depth

The third round saw Kansas City double down on defense with edge rusher Ashton Gillotte and cornerback Nohl Williams. While Gillotte’s college production dipped, his relentless motor makes him a fit for Steve Spagnuolo’s aggressive scheme. Williams brings strong ball skills and is expected to contribute early, particularly in zone coverage.

On offense, the Chiefs grabbed Jalen Royals in the fourth round. Royals impressed scouts with his speed and reliable hands, and while Kansas City still lacks a true No. 1 wideout, he strengthens a crowded receiver room.

Late-round gems and hidden potential

Linebacker Jeffery Bassa was a value steal in Round 5, bringing versatility and special teams upside. Meanwhile, Brashard Smith, once a receiver, now a running back, adds speed and flexibility to the offense.

Undrafted free agents Jake Briningstool (TE) and Glendon Miller (DB) are also intriguing. Briningstool, in particular, could be groomed as Travis Kelce’s eventual replacement.

Final grade: A-

After a brutal Super Bowl defeat, the Chiefs drafted with clarity and purpose. They added future starters, valuable depth, and long-term upside, all while staying true to their winning blueprint.
