Can the Bucks keep Giannis? Star forward speaks on uncertain future

Giannis Antetokounmpo has never been one to shy away from the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it may be. In recent interviews, the Milwaukee Bucks superstar acknowledged the possibility that he could be traded one day, and that he’s mentally prepared if it happens.

While he reiterated his loyalty to the Bucks, he also showed a mature understanding of how the NBA works: no one is untouchable.

This offseason, much of the league’s speculation centered on whether Giannis would request a trade following the Bucks’ early playoff exit. But despite the noise, the two-time MVP is staying put, for now.

He’ll begin the 2025-26 season in Milwaukee, continuing his pursuit of another championship. However, he made it clear: if the Bucks can’t prove they’re serious about contending, he won’t hesitate to look elsewhere.

In a candid interview with Sport24 from Greece, Giannis addressed the business realities of the league. “Just because you’ve given a lot to the team doesn’t mean the team won’t do what’s best for itself,” he said.

He pointed out that many of the team’s decision-makers have changed since Milwaukee’s 2021 title, and that today’s executives may view his value differently than those who built the championship roster.

“Grounded and prepared”: Giannis faces NBA reality with clarity

Giannis emphasized that he doesn’t have his “head in the clouds.” He’s aware that even superstars can be traded if ownership or the front office believes it’s best for the team’s future.

“If Giannis doesn’t work for me, can’t offer me what I need, I’ll trade him,” he said, imagining the perspective of a team executive. That mindset, while stark, reveals his willingness to separate emotion from business.

His reference to the shocking Luka Doncic trade earlier this year further underlines that anything can happen in today’s NBA. “When that trade happened, it wasn’t just me who was shocked, anyone who watches basketball was shocked,” he said.

But unlike fans and pundits, Giannis isn’t clinging to illusions. He’s staying focused, keeping control of what he can, his game and his mindset.

Though he made it clear he would never ask out of Milwaukee, Giannis is not naïve. He understands loyalty isn’t always reciprocated, and that every franchise is constantly weighing short-term results against long-term goals.

As the Bucks head into a crucial season, pressure is mounting on GM Jon Horst and the front office to build a true contender. If Milwaukee falls short again, Antetokounmpo may be forced to evaluate his future. While he’s not hoping for a trade, he’s ready for any outcome.

One thing is certain: Giannis wants to win. Whether that’s in Milwaukee or elsewhere depends on what happens next.
