Can Patrick Mahomes’ restructured contract keep Travis Kelce out of Chiefs?

The Kansas City Chiefs are facing pivotal decisions this offseason as they navigate a tight salary cap situation following their Super Bowl 59 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. With the 2025 season on the horizon and free agency beginning March 12, the Chiefs are $1 million over the salary cap and must address 20 unrestricted free agents. Central to these decisions is the future of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and legendary tight end Travis Kelce.

Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl MVP, carries a significant $66.2 million cap hit in 2025. However, the Chiefs have the option to restructure his contract to free up cap space. By converting $47.7 million of his salary into a restructuring bonus, Kansas City could spread the payment over the next five seasons, reducing his 2025 salary to $11.8 million and his overall cap hit to $28 million. This move would create nearly $39 million in cap space, offering much-needed financial flexibility.

Travis Kelce’s future, however, remains uncertain and could be directly impacted by any restructuring of Mahomes’ deal. The 10-time Pro Bowl tight end, who has been instrumental in the Chiefs’ success, is reportedly considering retirement. If Kelce decides to call it quits or if the Chiefs opt to trade or release him, the team could save $17.25 million against the cap. Adding urgency to the situation, Kelce is due an $11.5 million roster bonus on March 14, which is also when the Chiefs have reportedly set a deadline for him to decide his NFL future.

Kelce’s future with the Chiefs: Retirement or return?

Kelce recently addressed his potential retirement, releasing a statement that left fans speculating about his next move. “I’ve given everything I have to this game,” Kelce said, hinting at a decision that could reshape Kansas City’s roster and strategy moving forward.

The Chiefs are exploring all avenues to maintain their Super Bowl window while managing their finances. While restructuring Mahomes’ contract offers significant relief, other tough choices loom. Kansas City could also look to save $20 million through additional cuts or trades as they aim to remain competitive in a league where every dollar counts.

As one of the NFL’s most dynamic duos, Mahomes and Kelce’s futures are intertwined with the Chiefs’ ability to navigate this challenging offseason and continue their pursuit of championship glory.
