Cam Ward takes the wheel: Titans’ rookie QB ready to drive after Levis’ injury

Tennessee Titans rookie Cam Ward is entering training camp with one focus: winning the starting quarterback job, and now, that opportunity has come faster than expected.

The former Miami Hurricanes standout, selected No. 1 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, now finds himself thrust into the spotlight after veteran quarterback Will Levis was ruled out for the season with a shoulder injury.

Levis, who led the Titans through a disappointing 3-14 campaign in 2024, will undergo surgery on July 29 to repair an AC joint issue in his throwing shoulder. The timeline means he’ll miss the entire 2025 season, opening the door for Ward to take command of the offense right away.

When asked how he felt about the sudden change, Ward’s response was unexpectedly blunt. “I didn’t really have a reaction. I’m focused on Cam Ward,” he told reporters.

He added, “Wish him a speedy recovery,” but didn’t go further. It wasn’t a slight, it was a signal. Ward isn’t here to wait his turn; he’s here to lead.

Ward already making his presence felt in camp

Rather than easing into the role, Ward has been immediately placed with the first-team offense in camp. Early reports from Titans practice indicate that he’s forming quick chemistry with receivers Treylon Burks and veteran Tyler Lockett. His arm strength, mobility, and command of the huddle have stood out, even in limited reps.

Veteran players have noticed. Defensive leader Jeffery Simmons mentioned a recent moment where Ward bounced back from a sack by throwing an 80-yard touchdown pass on the next play.

“That’s when I knew he had that fire,” Simmons said. “He’s not afraid of the moment.”

Titans fans have been desperate for a sign of life after years of middling seasons and quarterback uncertainty. With Levis sidelined, the Titans’ depth chart includes only journeymen Brandon Allen and Tim Boyle behind Ward. That leaves Tennessee’s future firmly in the rookie’s hands.

Head coach Brian Callahan and GM Mike Borgonzi have made it clear: the job is Ward’s to earn-but it’s also his to lose.

For Will Levis, the future is unclear. The former Kentucky star was seen as the franchise’s answer just a year ago, but with a major injury and a top rookie replacing him, it’s possible his time as QB1 has already passed.

As for Ward, there’s no hesitation. His path is clear, and he’s not looking in the rearview mirror. For a franchise craving a new identity, Cam Ward may be just what the Titans need.
