Cam Ward, who is expected to be a first-round draft pick, has the support of his parents, Patrice and Calvin Ward.
According to a 2024 profile in The Miami Herald, Ward’s parents did not miss any of their son’s college football games at the University of Miami.
Ward’s mother and father “haven’t missed a single one of Ward’s games during his first four seasons of college football, traveling from Houston every weekend,” according to The Miami Herald.
Cam Ward comes from an athletic family
The Herald noted that both of Ward’s parents have ties to athletics. “Dad played football and mom spent nearly 25 years coaching high school basketball,” the newspaper reported.
Ward’s father, Calvin, is active on X, where he frequently shares stories about his son. “Graduate of the University of Houston – Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. MBA – University of Houston,” his page says.
Other professional athletes in the family
When Cam Ward played for the University of the Incarnate Word, his biography read: “His parents are Calvin and Patrice Ward… has three older brothers… one ran track at Houston Baptist University… also has two relatives in the NFL (Quandre Diggs plays for the Seattle Seahawks and Quintin Jammer for the San Diego Chargers)… started playing football at age eight… chose UIW because he felt it was where God wanted him to be… has not yet decided what career to pursue.”
Ward’s mother told 247Sports: “I’m a special education teacher at the high school. I’ve been doing this for 29 years. I’m also an assistant coach for the girls’ basketball team; my oldest daughter is the head coach, so I’m her assistant on the varsity team. I coached basketball for 24 years before I quit in 2016 because I wanted to see Cameron. After she became head coach, she called me back last year.” His father revealed to the site: “I work buying fuel for a nuclear power plant; this year I’m 33 years old. It’s often hard to talk to people about what I do; sometimes I come home and try to talk to my wife, but she doesn’t want to listen (both laugh). It’s not classified information, but (some things are). It’s really interesting.”
“Elite trainers who have been instrumental in the career of @Cameron7Ward. Thank you for supporting him in the Heisman Trophy,” Calvin Ward wrote in 2024.
“That’s my son,” Patrice Ward told The Miami Herald. “Sometimes I’m a little sensitive. If they say something about my son, I remind them that it’s my son… That’s what a mother does.”
His father is very nervous
“I get so into the game that I completely ignore the people around us,” Calvin Ward told The Herald. “I don’t get nervous because he’s been taught that the game doesn’t end until the clock hits zero, so I know that regardless of whether he’s having a great game or not, the team will still have a chance. … He will compete until the clock hits zero.”
“Cameron and I are competitive; our whole family is,” Patrice Ward told 247Sports. “We play family games all the time. But sometimes we stop playing because we get mad, someone tries to cheat at Monopoly; everyone is so competitive that they want to win with all their might.
