Cam Ward doesn’t hold back on Shedeur Sanders as forgotten No. 1 pick faces media spotlight gap

Cam Ward was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, but for some reason, he never captured all the attention. Meanwhile, Shedeur Sanders, selected in the fifth round, has become a media favorite constantly mentioned, followed, and spotlighted. It’s an ongoing contrast: one quarterback seemingly destined for the spotlight, the other consistently overshadowed despite his draft status. Especially now, right before the season begins, Ward addressed the situation with candor, making it clear where things stand between him and Sanders.

It’s rare to hear a No. 1 pick speak so warmly about someone who slid into the draft in the fifth round not often do you hear that kind of camaraderie. But that’s what makes this moment feel real. Ward isn’t competing for headlines; he’s focused on football. He’s prepared to start for the Tennessee Titans, while Sanders, despite his college success, still has to climb the depth chart in Cleveland behind Joe Flacco.

Ward calls Sanders “my boy”

In a recent appearance on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast, Ward said: “I don’t have a rivalry with him. That’s my boy. At the end of the day, this whole process, we thought me and him were going to be one and two the whole time…” He went on to praise Sanders not just as a talented QB, but as “a great person to be around,” acknowledging that media narratives often spin stories in ways that don’t tell the full truth.

Their bond goes back further both began at small FCS schools, Ward at Incarnate Word and Sanders at Jackson State. They met and connected over the shared journey of climbing to the FBS and now to the pros. That link adds context to why Ward’s comments sound so authentic: this isn’t just media friendliness, it’s a relationship built over years.

As the NFL season opens, this storyline is just heating up. Ward vs. Sanders isn’t the rivalry the media pitched it’s a quiet mutual respect. One quarterback is ready to lead immediately; the other is poised to prove his worth every step of the way. Fans of both teams, and all those who followed their journey from college to the pros, will be watching their chapters unfold.
