Cam Newton makes bold claim as Shedeur Sanders set for Browns’ first start

Former NFL star Cam Newton has weighed in strongly as rookie Shedeur Sanders prepares for his first career start with the Cleveland Browns.

In a recent interview, Newton accused the Browns’ coaching staff, led by Kevin Stefanski, of “setting up” Sanders to fail unless accountability and clarity improve.

Sanders will make his first NFL start this Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders, a move confirmed by Stefanski after starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel entered concussion protocol.

Newton‘s comments add a provocative twist ahead of the big moment, suggesting that not all league observers believe the Browns are fully backing their young quarterback.

The 23-year-old rookie enters this opportunity with mixed momentum. He made his debut last week in relief of Gabriel, but struggled – completing only 4 of 16 passes for 47 yards and throwing an interception.

Still, he expressed confidence and excitement when the starting role was confirmed, saying, “I feel like I’m the guy … I like pressure in life,” according to media reports.

Stefanski insists he’s preparing sanders for success

Coach Kevin Stefanski has made it clear that he is tailoring this week’s practice on “concepts that [Sanders] feels confident in.” Sources report that Sanders will take all first-team reps, a move meant to accelerate his development and give him the best chance to succeed.

Critics like Newton argue that without a genuine structure and accountability, the rookie could be set up to struggle. But Cleveland’s front office appears firmly behind Sanders – at least for now – calling his hard work and mental preparation “very encouraging.”

If Sanders can deliver in Las Vegas, it could mark the start of a new era for the Browns’ quarterback room. If not, Newton’s warning may end up resonating more than just a few voices.
