Cam Little’s historic 70-yard field goal earns Pro Football Hall of Fame recognition

The NFL preseason’s opening week delivered a stunning moment, and it wasn’t a quarterback or wide receiver who stole the spotlight, it was Jacksonville Jaguars rookie kicker Cam Little.

The 21-year-old dazzled fans and analysts alike by nailing a 70-yard field goal against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a kick that could be the longest ever recorded in football history.

While preseason achievements don’t count toward official NFL records, and Justin Tucker’s 66-yard field goal from 2021 still stands as the longest in the league’s history, Little’s extraordinary kick has captured widespread attention.

So much so that the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, has requested both his game-worn jersey and cleat to display in their legendary “football heaven” exhibit. This rare honor underscores the remarkable feat, even if it won’t officially rewrite record books.

A young star with a cannon for a leg

Cam Little’s powerful leg isn’t a surprise to those who follow the Jaguars closely. Logan Cooke, Jacksonville’s punter and the holder for field goals, praised Little’s strength and consistency.

“You see him do it all the time,” Cooke shared. “He hit a 72-yarder during a two-minute drill in practice recently. When he hits it straight, you just know it’s going through.”

Credit also goes to Jaguars first-year head coach Liam Coen, who had the confidence to give Little the opportunity to attempt such a long-range kick from his own 40-yard line. That bold decision paid off spectacularly and instantly made headlines.

Selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft at just 20 years old, Little has already made a strong impression in his rookie season. Before the historic kick, he had successfully converted 27 of 29 field goal attempts, with his longest being 59 yards, alongside perfect accuracy on 27 extra-point tries. These stats reveal a young athlete with exceptional skill and promising potential.

Little’s journey from Arkansas standout to NFL rookie has been swift and impressive. His ability to perform under pressure, combined with remarkable leg strength, makes him one of the most exciting kickers to watch this season. The 70-yard field goal not only showcases his talent but also signals a new level of possibility in special teams play.

As Little’s No. 39 jersey and cleat head to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, this moment of greatness will be immortalized, a tribute to a rookie kicker whose leg strength and poise might just rewrite what’s possible in the game of football. Whether or not the official records change, Little’s 70-yard boot is a moment fans and historians won’t soon forget.
