Cam Heyward, the seasoned Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman, has taken a firm stance in ongoing contract negotiations. After being named a first team All-Pro for the 2024 season, Heyward approached the team in February seeking a reworked deal. Nearly three weeks into training camp, progress remains stalled.
Heyward was on the sideline padless for the Jacksonville preseason game this past weekend. As a result, the 36 year old has engaged in a “hold-in” participating only in limited individual workouts and opting out of full-contract drills that define camp’s final phase.
What Heyward is demanding and why
Heyward is adamant about being compensated in line with his elite performance and veteran leadership. Despite signing a two year, $29 million extension in 2024, he sees his pay falling behind comparable defensive linemen. He currently ranks just 22nd among defensive tackles and 36th across defensive linemen in average salary.
With his All-Pro noder last season, a standout campaign, it’s his leverage for renegation. Heyward himself emphasized, “I’m looking to be valued…it’s hard for me…to justify playing at the number I’m playing at.”
Potential impact and team response
Heyward hasn’t ruled out missing regular season games if a deal isn’t reached. “There are definitely options out there that could reflect that”, he told reporters. Despite the tension, Coach Mike Tomlin remains calm, labeling the scenario as “big business” and welcoming the chance for younger players, like Derrick Harmon, Yahya Black, and Logan Lee, to step up during the ongoing standstill.
