Caitlin Clark’s teammate faces a crossroads ahead of next season

Sydney Colson joined the Indiana Fever this season, filled with uncertainty about whether she had made the right choice in leaving the Las Vegas Aces, a team where she spent many years and won three championships.

In the offseason, it was obviously a tough decision for me. I’ve been with the Aces for so long, and we did some amazing things together as a team,” Colson said during the Good Follow podcast. For her, however, the move ultimately proved to be one of the best decisions of her career, bringing new experiences and personal growth.

A unique and memorable season for Sydney Colson in Indiana

Colson’s arrival in Indiana brought veteran leadership and energy to a young team led by Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston. She appeared in 30 games, averaging 2.4 points and 2 assists in 13.5 minutes per outing before suffering the second ACL injury of her career.

At 36, Colson showed she still has plenty of competitive spirit left. Yet the injury she sustained against the Phoenix Mercury sidelined her for the remainder of the campaign and raised questions about her future.

Reflecting on the year, she shared heartfelt words on Instagram:

What a season! Genuinely enjoyed this team and what we did on the court & in the showers! I knew in the offseason that God was placing me where I needed to be to grow & learn some necessary lessons & that’s exactly what happened. And at the end of the day, I earned one more championship and one more ACL so life is good.

Her post resonated with fans but also sparked concern, as she is now set to enter free agency without restrictions. During her podcast appearance, Colson also hinted that a future in coaching might be calling her, recalling her brief experience as an assistant coach at Texas A&M and Rice University.

Oh, I enjoyed it so much. I think same for when I’ve played. I enjoy the relationship aspect of everything I do more than the like actual thing typically. So, coaching was cool. It was fun. Like playing basketball is cool and it’s fun, but it’s the people that I get to meet and interact with and the way that human interaction like y’all can change one another’s lives just by something you say, something you do. So, it was more about that me being able to impact young women.

Will Sydney Colson return to the Fever?

That’s the question on the minds of many Fever fans. As of now, only three players are under contract for Indiana: Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Makayla Timpson. With roster limits capped at 12, Colson’s return appears uncertain, especially considering the team’s guard depth, which includes Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, Aari McDonald, and Odyssey Sims.

Additionally, players like Sophie Cunningham and Lexie Hull are expected to be in contention for roster spots. Given Colson’s age and recovery from a serious ACL injury, earning a place on the team again will be a steep challenge. As the WNBA offseason begins, all eyes will be on how the Fever rebuild and whether Colson’s journey in Indiana continues into 2026.
