Caitlin Clark’s surprising starting quintet of sports stars causes surprise and controversy

Caitlin Clark has never been shy about her love for the sports world, and just before tipping off her second WNBA season, the Indiana Fever star took a moment to highlight the athletes she admires most. In a pregame video played at Gainbridge Fieldhouse ahead of the Fever‘s season-opening matchup against the Chicago Sky, Clark was asked to name her personal “starting five” of sports legends.

Clark’s star-studded lineup began with two GOATs: tennis icon Serena Williams and NBA all-time leading scorer LeBron James. She followed them up with Steph Curry, calling in the greatest shooter basketball has ever seen.

After a brief pause, she closed out her dream team with three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes and current world No. 1 women’s golfer Nelly Korda. After listing her picks, Clark smiled and said: “That’s a good squad.”

A squad full of champions and game-changers

Clark’s selections speak volumes about her respect for greatness across different disciplines. Williams redefined women’s tennis, claiming 23 Grand Slam singles titles, and continues to serve as an inspiration for countless young athletes, particularly women of color.

James, with four NBA championships and a seemingly ageless career that includes being the league’s all-time leading scorer, is a figure Clark has often praised for his versatility and longevity.

Then there’s Curry, whose revolutionary three-point shooting has reshaped the NBA over the past decade. Like Clark, Curry combines dazzling range with high basketball IQ, making his inclusion feel particularly fitting.

The quarterback of Clark’s fantasy team, Mahomes, has already established himself as one of the NFL’s elite, winning three Super Bowl titles and MVP honors with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Lastly, Korda, the Olympic gold medalist and 14-time LPGA Tour winner, rounds out the lineup. Korda has recently dominated the golf world and currently holds the No. 1 ranking in women’s golf.

Clark’s WNBA season kicks off with a statement win

The Fever didn’t just kick off their season with fanfare around Clark’s video; they backed it up with a resounding 93-58 victory over the Sky. Clark, now entering her sophomore season in the WNBA, led Indiana with a commanding performance that highlighted the growth in her game and confidence on the floor.
