Caitlin Clark’s newfound WNBA rival team is about to get sold and relocated to the Boston

Reports surfaced on August 2, 2025, that Steve Pagliuca, minority governor of the NBA’s Boston Celtics, has agreed to acquire the Connecticut Sun for a record $325 million, with intentions to relocate the franchise to Boston’s TD Garden and donate $100 million toward building a new practice facility there. Sounds like Caitlin Clark’s rivalry with the team will have a new and historic setting.

A landmark sale and big investment

The reported sale would set a new benchmark for women’s sports franchises, eclipsing previous records by a wide margin. Pagliuca’s proposed $325 million purchase price represents a massive leap from the $10 million valuation when the Mohegan Tribe bought the team in 2003.

In tandem, the plan calls for $100 million of investment into western Massachusetts to develop a modern practice facility, addressing a long-standing operational gap for the Sun.

From Uncasville to TD Garden

Since relocating from Orlando in 2002, the Connecticut Sun has made the playoffs nearly every year and become the first WNBA franchise to generate consistent profits. Nonetheless, logistical shortcomings, like practicing in shared community centers and the absence of a dedicated facility, have plagues the organization.

Boston’s appeal isn’t theoretical: the Sun have played two games at TD Garden in recent seasons and sold out both. That clearly signals strong fan interest, making the proposed relocation feel both logical and comercially strategic. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey also voiced enthusiastic support for the move, emphasizing Boston’s sports culture and its potential to elevate WNBA visibility.

However, the WNBA Board of Governors must approve the transaction. League leadership has stressed that relocation is a collective decision and Boston was not among the original cities selected for expansion in the recent round.
