Caitlin Clark’s injury exposes WNBA’s reliance on star power

Anyone still doubting Caitlin Clark‘s impact on the WNBA now has data to reconsider.

Since the Indiana Fever star was sidelined with a quad injury, both fan engagement and sports betting around the team have taken a noticeable hit – reaffirming that Clark isn’t just a promising rookie, but the central figure in the league’s current growth.

In the first few games of the season, Clark consistently drew national attention, helping Indiana Fever games reach millions of viewers. But without her on the court, the numbers tell a drastically different story.

Caesars Sportsbook reported a more than 50% decline in betting activity on the Fever after Clark’s injury, while BetMGM noted a 37% drop in interest for Indiana’s recent games against the Washington Mystics and Connecticut Sun.

Viewership Slumps Without the League’s Top Draw

Clark’s effect on TV ratings has been even more dramatic. According to Sports Business Journal, 22 WNBA games featuring Clark crossed the one million viewer mark this season – a new record, with the previous high of 15 games dating all the way back to 1997.

With Clark on the court, Indiana games averaged around 1.19 million viewers. Without her, the figure falls to just under 400,000. That’s a difference of nearly 200%.

And it’s not just ratings or wagers that decline. There’s a noticeable shift in general buzz and media attention. While stars like Angel Reese and A’ja Wilson are integral to the league, they haven’t generated the same level of excitement or crossover appeal.

Clark, thanks to her elite shooting range, flashy passing, and competitive flair, has become a must-watch attraction – and, arguably, the most valuable asset the league has.

Critics have suggested that Clark’s popularity is inflated or overly curated, with some pointing to her race or media friendliness as factors.

But as her consistent on-court performances show, Clark has earned the spotlight with talent and production. The reaction to her absence only reinforces how central she is to the league’s popularity.

Even while injured, she remains a focal point. On Monday, she was seen courtside in a red hoodie during Indiana’s matchup with Washington, drawing as much attention as the players in uniform. The camera followed her reactions, and the conversation around her didn’t stop.

Clark’s Star Power Is the League’s Driving Force

Clark’s absence has given the WNBA a reality check: without her, interest drops. And while some may view that as a temporary dip, it underscores a deeper issue – the league’s dependence on a single player to carry its momentum.

The solution isn’t to sideline other stars but to recognize Clark’s unique influence and build around it. The league’s success shouldn’t hinge entirely on one name, but ignoring the clear economic and cultural lift she provides would be a mistake.

For now, the message is clear: the WNBA is better, richer, and more relevant when Caitlin Clark is playing. And for the league’s long-term growth, keeping her happy and healthy should be a top priority.
