Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever teammate turns into a star in her absence and could be more important

It’s a trying time for the Indiana Fever. Head coach Stephanie White is starting to hear from critics, with the team sitting at 2-4 through six games. It’s hard to blame her for the last two games, though, as star player Caitlin Clark has been out with a quad strain that could keep her out for another week or so. The Fever can’t let their season go to waste just because Clark is out, and some teammates have stepped up in her absence to try to keep the ship upright.

Aliyah Boston, in particular, has been trying to do it all in the two games without Clark. In Clark’s final game before the injury, Boston exploded with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Since then, she has shot 80% from the field while contributing plenty in every statistical category. If it wasn’t for foul trouble, Boston could have had two massive games with Clark sidelined. It’s a trend that has continued since the start of the season.

Aliyah Boston has arguably been Indiana Fever’s best player in 2025

In fact, Boston has been outplaying Clark so far this season. The underlying metrics bear that out. Boston’s net rating and PER (player efficiency rating) are the best on the team among those with extensive playing time.

None of this should be all too surprising for those who have followed Boston’s basketball career to this point. She was a dominant force at South Carolina, where she won an NCAA Championship and was named Tournament MOP in her final collegiate season. She then won the WNBA Rookie of the Year in her first season with the Fever, and has been an All-Star in both of her WNBA seasons to date.

Boston putting it all together in her third season is exactly what the Fever need. Clark being out is never a good thing for Indiana, but if it means that Boston and others can use the increase in on-ball time to their developmental advantage, then there could be some good that comes out of her injury.
