Caitlin Clark threatens referee by saying she’d “call the league” on him

Caitlin Clark had another standout performance in Tuesday night’s win over the Connecticut Sun – until the final minute, when she hobbled off the court with what looked like a repeat of the ankle issue she dealt with earlier this season. But well before that, the game took a different kind of turn.

In the third quarter, Clark found herself in a tense exchange with veteran referee Michael Price. It started with what seemed like frustration over a no-call. Clark voiced her displeasure, Price said something back – and things escalated from there.

Clark wasn’t done. She approached Price again, telling him to “grow up” before making a phone-call motion with her hand. Cameras appeared to catch her saying: “I will be calling the league on you.”

A Flashpoint That Could Have League Repercussions

Teammates stepped in, easing Clark away from the situation, but not before the moment had made its way to social media, where clips quickly went viral. The back-and-forth added another layer to what was already an emotionally charged game between two playoff-contending teams.

ESPN’s Andraya Carter noted postgame, “Clark has always been fiery – that’s part of her edge – but this was more direct than we’re used to seeing.” On FanDuel TV, Shams Charania suggested the league may take a closer look at the interaction given the visibility and potential violation of league conduct rules.

The WNBA has not issued a formal comment as of Wednesday morning. Past incidents involving player-official disputes, like A’ja Wilson’s fine in 2023, suggest a response may still be coming.

Meanwhile, Clark’s late-game injury could have major implications. The All-Star Game is just days away in Indianapolis, and her status remains up in the air. The Fever are also set to face the Liberty on Wednesday night – with or without their star guard on the floor.
