Former Iowa Hawkeyes basketball player Ava Jones has faced unimaginable challenges over the past few years, and now she is fighting a new battle. On February 8, Jones announced via Instagram that she has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system.

“This is the news no one ever wants to get,” Jones wrote. “But especially after spending the last two and a half years working my butt off and recovering from getting hit by a car. My body is very strong, and I am confident in the doctors here at Iowa.”

Jones‘ resilience has been tested before. In 2022, just days after committing to play for Iowa, she and her family were struck by a vehicle in Louisville. The accident took the life of her father, Trey Jones, and left Ava with a traumatic brain injury. Her mother, Amy, also sustained serious injuries.

Despite her medical challenges, Iowa honored her commitment, placing her on scholarship and including her on the team’s roster as a freshman. However, in 2024, Jones medically retired from basketball, ending her playing career before it could truly begin.

Caitlin Clark and the Iowa community rally behind Jones

News of Jones‘ diagnosis quickly spread, and one of the first to offer support was Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark. The projected No. 1 pick in the upcoming WNBA Draft, Clark took to Instagram to share a simple yet powerful message:

“Praying for you, kid .”

Clark wasn’t alone in showing support. Former Iowa teammate Gabbie Marshall also commented, ” So much love for you Ava!”

Jones‘ heartbreaking news has sparked an outpouring of love from the Iowa Hawkeyes community, with fans, teammates, and supporters rallying around her during this difficult time.

Strength in the face of adversity

After surviving a life-altering accident, Jones has already proven her strength and resilience. Now, as she faces another battle, she won’t have to do it alone. The Iowa women’s basketball program and its fanbase stand firmly behind her, offering unwavering support as she takes on this latest challenge.
