The 2025 WNBA season couldn’t have gone too much worse for Caitlin Clark. Heading into her second professional season, Clark was expected to take an MVP-style leap and lead the Indiana Fever deep into the playoffs. She began the year shooting abnormally inefficiently, but it was injuries that truly derailed her.
Ultimately, Clark got shut down by the team and had to watch from the sidelines as the Fever rallied without her and made it to the semifinals of the playoffs. Not being able to contribute killed Clark, and now she has eyes on the 2026 season for a huge bounceback. While her health may be in question going into next year, the mental aspect of her game may be stronger than ever.
Caitlin Clark improved her reading of the game while watching Indiana Fever from the sidelines
In an article published by the Fever, in which they did a “Player Review” of Clark recounting her season, a quote from the player revealed something interesting about her time off the court. In a way, it helped her process the game of basketball in a different light.
The biggest thing that kind of helped me process from the sideline is you can really just digest the game in a different manner. Obviously, when you’re on the court, it’s so fast and there’s so many different things I’m trying to read… But from the side, I think you can really understand how the game flows and what your team really needs in that moment.
Clark was already a cerebral player, as evidenced by her court vision and ability to dish out assists to anyone on the court. Having the game slow down for her while watching from the sidelines seems to have helped her see it all differently. Now she knows what her team needs from her and when it needs it. That should make the rest of the WNBA slightly worried.
