Caitlin Clark return date revealed by ESPN raises uncertainty if she will play again this season with Indiana

It’s been a while since Caitlin Clark stepped on a basketball court wearing the Fever uniform. In fact, her last WNBA game was on July 15 in an 85-77 win against the Connecticut Sun. Since then, she has missed the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game, which was played in her hometown of Indiana. Of course, last season they chose that location for this year’s event because of her and the attention she brings to the league. For the ASG she was named captain and finished with the most votes in WNBA history. She has also missed the Fever’s last 16 games, making it 17 as she will be out again for tonight’s matchup in Los Angeles against the Sparks, who with a win would complicate the Fever’s chances of making the playoffs.

In total, beyond these 17 straight absences, Clark has missed 26 games this year, including the Commissioner’s Cup Final win against the Lynx, the best team this season, due to three separate injuries. In those 26 games without her, the Fever hold a 13-18 record, while with her in the lineup they are 8-5, even though she hasn’t played more than five consecutive games and her statistics have dipped compared to what she showed in her historic rookie season.

ESPN Pushes Back Clark’s Return Timeline

The uncertainty surrounding Caitlin Clark’s return has grown, with ESPN repeatedly delaying her projected comeback date on their injury report feature. Initially set for August 12, her return was pushed to August 26 against the Seattle Storm, then to September 2 against the Phoenix Mercury, and now to September 7, when the Fever face the Washington Mystics.

With tonight’s game against the Sparks and Sunday’s clash with the Golden State Valkyries-another pivotal game with playoff implications-unlikely to feature Clark, questions arise about whether she’ll play again this season. The Fever have four games left after tonight, closing with the Mystics and a home finale against MVP favorite Napheesa Collier and the Minnesota Lynx. Clark’s lack of full-contact practice adds to the uncertainty, leaving fans frustrated as ESPN’s shifting timeline fuels speculation about her status for the remainder of the 2025 season.

Fever’s Playoff Hopes Hinge on Clark’s Return

Ultimately, the Indiana Fever’s primary goal is to secure a playoff spot, which could provide Caitlin Clark with extra time and motivation to return before the season ends. Some have suggested shutting her down entirely to ensure a full recovery, but Clark’s history of thriving in high-pressure, spotlight moments from her Iowa days suggests she’s eager to return.

Her absence has sparked speculation about a strategic move by the WNBA and the Fever to keep her return date vague, preserving fan interest and TV ratings as the playoffs approach. With Indiana’s postseason chances on the line, a win tonight against the Sparks could keep their hopes alive. However, with an extended absence by Clark and her lack of rhythm, her impact in the playoffs-if she returns-could be negative for Indiana.

Fans will have to wait until at least September 7 for clarity, clinging to the hope that their star player can lead the Fever to a postseason breakthrough.
