Caitlin Clark recounts her latest encounter with LeBron James: “I smiled at him, and he just gave me a cold stare.”

Caitlin Clark experienced a brief, awkward moment with LeBron James this week while photographing the Los Angeles Lakers at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The Indiana Fever star smiled at the NBA icon, but James returned only a straight-faced stare, leaving Clark momentarily frozen.

Clark has been steadily expanding her presence in sports media, making her debut on NBC‘s Sunday Night Basketball during the Lakers vs. New York Knicks game in February. Her composure and analytical skills on-air impressed viewers, and she has since taken on dual roles, combining live analysis with photography at NBA events.

On Wednesday, March 25, Clark captured images of LeBron James during the Indiana Pacers vs. Lakers matchup. Later, she returned to Sunday Night Basketball to cover the Oklahoma City Thunder vs. New York Knicks game, seamlessly blending her photography work with on-air commentary.

She shared the experience with colleagues Maria Taylor, Carmelo Anthony, Vince Carter, and Tracy McGrady, asking whether they had seen her photos of James. While Carter noted that her player popularity gave her access, Clark quickly realized the superstar was completely focused on the game.

“I swear [she and James] made eye contact,” Clark recounted. “So I sat down the camera, and I smiled at him, and he just looked at me with a straight face. I’m like, ‘He didn’t even see me,’ but the photos turned out well.”

Bronny James’ role could shape LeBron’s future in Los Angeles

The Lakers’ upcoming playoff run coincides with LeBron James contemplating his future with the franchise. One key consideration is the opportunity to share court time with his son, Bronny James. A father-son pairing could significantly influence whether LeBron returns for the 2026 season, blending personal motivation with professional goals.

Bronny James has logged meaningful minutes in recent games alongside his father, providing opportunities for mentorship while still competing at a high level. “LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Rich Paul told ESPN, emphasizing that LeBron is satisfied with the franchise’s efforts while keeping realistic opportunities in mind.

The NBA legend may even accept a reduced role and lower pay to ensure Bronny sees more court time-a trade-off LeBron appears willing to make. During the 137-130 win over the Pacers, he visibly enjoyed mentoring his son, underlining the personal dimension in his next career decision.

Currently in the second year of his $7.9 million rookie deal, Bronny James has two seasons remaining, aligning with LeBron‘s potential timeline. Continued playing time for Bronny could weigh heavily in James‘s choice, combining mentorship, family, and competitive ambitions. The Lakers’ chemistry, paired with the chance for father-son moments on the court, adds further appeal for LeBron to remain in Los Angeles.
