The Indiana Fever continue to shape their roster for the upcoming WNBA season, officially confirming the return of guard Sophie Cunningham on a one-year contract. The move reinforces Indiana’s strategy of maintaining continuity around its rising core, headlined by Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston, while also carefully managing salary cap flexibility for future seasons.

Cunningham‘s return comes after a difficult 2025 campaign that was cut short by injury, but also highlighted her value as a dependable veteran presence in the rotation.

Cunningham‘s season ended in August after she suffered a torn MCL in her right knee during a matchup against the Connecticut Sun. The injury required surgery and forced her into an extended recovery period. However, she has since provided an encouraging update on her “Show Me Something” podcast, stating that she has fully recovered and is ready to return to competitive action.

Her availability for the upcoming season is a significant boost for Indiana, particularly given her versatility and experience in high-pressure games.

The Fever’s roster decisions have not stopped with Cunningham. The organization has also re-signed Kelsey Mitchell to another one-year deal, ensuring that another key scorer remains in the backcourt.

These short-term agreements reflect front-office strategy focused on flexibility, especially with both Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston becoming eligible for substantial contract extensions in the near future.

With rising financial commitments expected, Indiana is working to keep its roster competitive without locking itself into restrictive long-term deals.

Fever build depth and experience around emerging stars

Alongside its returning core, Indiana has also retained Lexie Hull while adding Monique Billings and Ty Harris through free agency. These moves provide depth and balance across the roster, addressing both perimeter scoring and frontcourt support.

The Fever are clearly prioritizing a well-rounded lineup that can support its young stars while remaining adaptable throughout the season.

Cunningham originally joined the Fever after being acquired from the Phoenix Mercury, where she spent the first six seasons of her professional career. Drafted 13th overall in the 2019 WNBA Draft out of Missouri, she developed into a reliable rotational guard known for her toughness, defensive effort, and energy off the bench.

During her time with Indiana in the 2025 season, she started 13 games and averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, offering consistent contributions before her injury brought her season to an early end.

Her return adds another experienced voice to a locker room that is rapidly evolving around its young centerpiece talent. With Caitlin Clark’s playmaking ability transforming Indiana’s offense and Aliyah Boston anchoring the paint, the Fever are building a foundation that blends star power with seasoned role players.

By retaining key contributors on short-term deals, the Fever are positioning themselves to compete immediately while preserving long-term flexibility.
