Caitlin Clark injury deepens Fever crisis as second starter ruled out with no return date

The Indiana Fever are navigating a growing injury crisis just six games into their 2025 WNBA campaign, and now they’ll be without not one, but two key contributors when they take the floor against the Washington Mystics on Tuesday night.

Superstar rookie Caitlin Clark remains unavailable after suffering a left quad injury during the team’s narrow loss to the New York Liberty on May 31.

Though she completed the game, observers noted she was icing her leg during a timeout, and the Fever later confirmed she would miss at least two weeks. Her condition is set to be re-evaluated on June 9, meaning she’ll remain out through this week’s contests.

Unfortunately for Indiana, the problems don’t stop with Clark. In Friday’s 85-83 defeat to the Connecticut Sun, guard Sophie Cunningham aggravated a right ankle injury that had already sidelined her for the opening two games of the season.

On Monday, the team announced that Cunningham would not be available against the Mystics, alongside Clark.

Fever rotation stretched thin as coach White offers cautious optimism

While the team listed Sydney Colson as healthy in the latest injury report, her brief exit from the last game raised concerns. The veteran guard left the court during the first quarter with an apparent leg injury but was not officially ruled out by Monday.

Speaking to the media, head coach Stephanie White offered a slightly more optimistic outlook regarding Colson and Cunningham, though she emphasized the uncertainty around their timelines.

“I think we got good news from both of their MRIs, as good of news as you can get,” White said. “And so right now, it’s a day-to-day thing. We’re looking forward to hopefully them returning at some point sooner rather than later, but at the same time, it’s how each of them progresses in their rehab.”

Colson is expected to continue running point in Clark’s absence, assuming she’s cleared to play. In the meantime, guards Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull are expected to shoulder more offensive responsibilities, particularly with Cunningham sidelined once again.

Tip-off for Tuesday’s game against the Mystics is set for 7 p.m. ET, and the Fever will be hoping that their reshuffled rotation can stay competitive while they wait on their stars to heal.
