The Indiana Fever have recently signed guard Aari McDonald to an emergency hardship contract following a series of injuries to key players.

This move comes as the team faces challenges with the absence of star rookie Caitlin Clark, among others.

Who is Aari McDonald?

Aari McDonald is a 5-foot-6 guard who was drafted third overall in the 2021 WNBA Draft by the Atlanta Dream. During her rookie season, she averaged 6.3 points, 2.0 assists, and 1.6 rebounds per game, earning a spot on the WNBA All-Rookie Team.

Known for her defensive prowess, McDonald led all first-year players with 25 steals and 59 assists during the 2021 season.

In 2024, McDonald was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks, where she continued to showcase her skills. Her speed and energy on the court were highlighted by teammates, with Kia Nurse noting, “Aari‘s speed is incredible… I think she’s only just kind of scratching the surface of what she can do in this league.”

Why did the Fever sign McDonald?

The Indiana Fever have been dealing with significant injuries to key players. Caitlin Clark, the team’s star rookie, is sidelined due to a left quad strain and is expected to miss at least two weeks.

Additionally, guard Sydney Colson is out with an upper leg injury, and forward Sophie Cunningham is dealing with an ankle sprain.

With only nine active players available, the Fever utilized the WNBA’s emergency hardship exception to sign McDonald. This exception allows teams with fewer than 10 available players to sign replacements immediately.

What can McDonald bring to the team?

McDonald is expected to contribute both offensively and defensively. Head coach Stephanie White emphasized the need for a player who can impact the game on both ends of the court.

Her experience and skills make her a valuable addition to the Fever during this challenging period.

As the Fever navigate through these injuries, Aari McDonald’s addition provides a much-needed boost to the team. Her experience and energy will be crucial as the team works to maintain its competitive edge in the league.
