Caitlin Clark gets candid on her toughest battle as Fever clinch playoffs without her

Caitlin Clark, the Indiana Fever’s floor general and 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year, has been sidelined since mid-summer due to persistent groin and ankle injuries. Despite her absence, the Fever recently clinched a playoff spot, demonstrating remarkable resilience.

Yet, behind the stats and clutch performances lies Clark’s candid admission of an internal battle-even as she cheered from the bench.

Clark’s season unraveled as soon as it began. After a blistering start that included a triple-double in her first game of the year, she suffered a left quadriceps strain, followed by a left groin injury, a right groin setback, and even a bone bruise in her ankle.

Though she attempted a comeback, ultimately the team decided to protect Caitlin’s health.

Caitlin Clark’s message of despair

It led to Clark writing an emotional post on social media after being told she would be out for the remainder of the season.

“Disappointed isn’t a big enough word to describe how I am feeling. This has been incredibly frustrating, but even in the bad, there is good,” she said.

“The way the fans continued to show up for me, and for the Fever, brought me so much joy and important perspective. I am so proud of how this team has only gotten stronger through adversity this year.”

Indiana Fever GM Amber Cox emphasized the team’s priority: “Caitlin has worked so hard throughout this time, doing everything possible to recover and return. Ultimately, time is not on our side, her long-term health and well-being remains our top priority.”

Fever triumph despite losing their star

Even without Clark on the court, Indiana’s season remained vibrant. They secured a playoff berth for the second year in a row and set a franchise playoff wins record with 23, setting up their first home postseason berth since 2016.

Key performers like Kelsey Mitchell, Aliyah Boston, and Natasha Howard locked in incredible consistency. Boston and Mitchell delivered career-high seasons, with Mitchell stepping into a lead playmaking role, while Howard brought veteran grit.

Boston spoke on the team’s unity: “We never doubted ourselves… it was about sticking together…and play with joy… regardless of who’s on that floor.”

Still, fans and analysts have voiced concerns. Without Clark, Indiana’s offense shifted from explosive to more mundane, and playoff odds-once promising-now hover around 34 percent to advance deep into the postseason.

Clark’s absence has both exposed and deepened the “Clark effect”-her on-court presence once drove record viewership, attendance, and team revenue.

Yet, today, it’s her mental resilience and ability to unite a roster that spotlight her impact. She may be out of uniform, but her leadership and spirit continue to influence Indiana’s playoff push.
