Caitlin Clark explains why golf tests her more than basketball: “It’s way more stressful”

Caitlin Clark’s second year in the WNBA unfolded far differently than many had anticipated. Instead of spending consistent minutes on the court, the Indiana Fever guard endured a difficult season shaped by injury setbacks.

A persistent groin issue repeatedly stalled her return, and despite multiple attempts to get back into game shape, medical clearance never arrived. With her body not fully responding, Clark was forced into an unfamiliar role, supporting her teammates from the bench while traveling with the team.

Though frustrating, the experience tested her patience and resilience as she focused on recovery rather than competition.

As the WNBA season came to an end, Clark finally began to feel healthier, allowing her to ease back into physical activity. The offseason offered a chance to reset both mentally and physically, and she quickly gravitated toward another sport she deeply enjoys: golf.

Away from the intensity of professional basketball, the fairway became her new source of adventure. That passion was on full display when Clark participated in the Annika Pro-Am, an event that blends elite golfers with high-profile athletes and personalities.

Her involvement instantly drew attention, with fans eager to see how one of basketball’s brightest stars would fare in a different arena. Clark shared the course with several prominent figures, including LPGA standout Nelly Korda, further elevating the event’s visibility.

While her swings were not flawless, some shots strayed into the crowd, Clark embraced the challenge and the spotlight, proving she was willing to step outside her comfort zone.

Why golf feels more intimidating

During a recent social media feature posted by the WNBA, Clark was asked an intriguing question: would she prefer attempting a 30-foot putt or taking a 30-foot buzzer-beater to win a game? Her response came instantly and without hesitation.

Clark admitted that golf is far more stressful for her than basketball, explaining that the pressure she feels over a single putt outweighs the nerves of a late-game shot.

That admission surprised some fans, given her reputation for delivering in high-pressure basketball moments. However, the individual nature of golf, combined with the technical precision required on every swing, clearly presents a different mental challenge.

Unlike basketball, where she thrives on rhythm and momentum, golf leaves no room to hide mistakes.

Adding to the lighthearted atmosphere, Clark was joined by Fever teammates Sophie Cunningham and Lexie Hull as her caddies. While appreciative of their energy, Clark jokingly admitted they offered little practical help. According to her, their knowledge of golf was limited, but their positive vibes made the experience enjoyable.

Despite the pressure and playful complaints, Clark performed solidly at the Pro-Am. Whether battling injury, embracing a new sport, or laughing through challenges, she continues to show adaptability and competitive spirit wherever she plays.
