The main goal for the Buffalo Bills is to return to a Super Bowl after more than 20 years and, above all, to win the first Vince Lombardi Trophy in franchise history. There’s no doubt that with Josh Allen at the helm, the chances are high; however, the team is still a couple of players away from making it happen.
The biggest need, without a doubt, is a true number-one receiver – one the Bills currently do not have, and it seems they are far from getting one, especially due to Josh Allen’s $330 million contract, of which $250 million is guaranteed, making him the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history in terms of guaranteed money.
After that deal, the Bills’ general manager said a few days ago that it is practically impossible to bring in a top receiver, and that they will try to replicate the Patriots’ model with Tom Brady, who made history in New England without a star receiver.
The Patriots’ formula could work for the Bills
A year ago, the Bills lost two key receivers: Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis – a duo that undoubtedly posed a threat to any defense. However, in 2024, Buffalo still managed to average 30.9 points per game and reached the AFC Championship Game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
In a local Buffalo media outlet, the topic of the Bills’ biggest needs came up, and a number-one receiver is certainly one of them, but all is not lost: “In terms of receivers, the depth is decent, but there’s no true No. 1 option,” the site writes.
With Khalil Shakir, Curtis Samuel, Keon Coleman, Joshua Palmer, and tight ends Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox, Allen has some intriguing options. Plus, James Cook and Ty Johnson are also solid contributors in the passing game.
So this offseason, Josh Allen will have to spend plenty of time with his offensive coordinator Joe Brady to try to develop a system where, even without a clear number-one receiver, the Bills can remain dangerous – and above all, true AFC contenders.
