Buccaneers make surprising decision that could affect Shilo Sanders’ future

The 2025 NFL Draft was a milestone moment for Deion Sanders‘ family, as both of his sons officially began their NFL journeys.

While quarterback Shedeur Sanders was selected 144th overall by the Cleveland Browns, his older brother, Shilo Sanders, took a different route, signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent.

Despite not hearing his name called during the seven-round draft, Shilo‘s path to the NFL is far from over. In fact, the former Colorado Buffaloes safety may just have a real shot at making the Buccaneers‘ 53-man roster this fall.

Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles and his staff have already started reshuffling the team’s offseason roster. On Tuesday, the Bucs released wide receiver Marquez Callaway and waived three other players – cornerback Dallis Flowers, outside linebacker Daniel Grzesiak, and wide receiver Tanner Knue – creating additional space to bring in undrafted talent.

With 15 open spots available under the team’s 90-player offseason roster limit, Shilo will now have the opportunity to prove he belongs.

Shilo’s playmaking ability and experience could help him stick in Tampa Bay

During his time at Colorado, Shilo Sanders quietly developed into a reliable and physical defensive back. Over 21 games with the Buffaloes, he totaled 137 tackles, one interception, and five passes defended. What made him stand out even more was his knack for creating turnovers – forcing five fumbles and recovering three.

His combination of experience, football IQ, and physicality has caught the attention of analysts who believe he can earn a spot on Tampa Bay’s final roster.

“With significant collegiate experience, a high football IQ and solid athletic ability for the safety position, Sanders is an effective coverage defender with a penchant for forcing fumbles,” Jacob Infante of PFSN said.

“Experienced starting defensive back whose ample playing time over the years shows in how he processes in coverage.”
