Bubba Watson, the two-time Masters champion, claims Scottie Scheffler‘s 2024 is better than Tiger Woods‘ 2000 PGA season but fans remain divided on the controversial take.
Watson has been on the tour since 2002 and almost became World Number 1 in 2015, meaning he competed against Woods at the peak of his powers and has also seen the rise of the 28-year-old too.
Well-placed to cast judgement on golf as a sport, as well as his peers, that’s exactly what the 46-year-old American chose to do when he was asked about the dynamic force of Scottie and his caddy, Ted Scott, who previously worked for Watson.
“I know Tiger did some stuff in 2000,” Watson told GOLF.com. “But Scottie‘s year (2024) was the best we’ve ever seen.”
Fans were not exactly convinced by the take as they flooded to X.com, formerly known as Twitter, to slam the suggestion.
One fan simply said, “No.”
Whilst a second added, “Not even close.”
And a third commented, “Could be one of the worst golf takes of all times.”
What did Tiger Woods’ 2000 look like?
Whilst Scheffler produced a very impressive 2024 by qualifying for 17 out of 19 events, missing the US Open and BMW Championship, and went on to win the Masters and the British Open as well as Olympic gold.
He also won seven tournaments, finished second in two more and finished third in one. Of his 17 appearances, he only finished outside of the Top 10 on the solitary occasion and made $29.2m in prize winnings.
But Woods‘ 2000 blows this out of the water. The all-time great won the US Open, the PGA Championship, and the Open Championship and romped home to nine PGA wins. He finished fifth at the Masters that year.
Woods also made the top 25 at every single tournament and also set a new record for most consecutive wins by winning six on the spin, as well as establishing the lowest scoring average.
