Browns veteran Cornelius Lucas does not deny reports and subtly puts Joe Flacco ahead of Shedeur Sanders

As the Cleveland Browns prepare for one of their most intriguing training camps in recent memory, a clear quarterback controversy is brewing. With four signal-callers vying for the top job, the Browns‘ QB room is starting to resemble a high-stakes poker game, with head coach Kevin Stefanski carefully holding his cards close to the vest.

The Browns’ quarterback depth chart includes a unique mix of experience and potential: Joe Flacco, the seasoned veteran and former Super Bowl MVP; Kenny Pickett, the former Steeler hoping for a fresh start; and two rookies with contrasting styles and hype in Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel.

All four quarterbacks bring something different to the table, but Stefanski must decide whether to lean into veteran stability or invest in the franchise’s future.

Vets appear to prefer Flacco’s experience

While analysts and fans alike continue to speculate about the Week 1 starter, some clarity may have come from the subtle body language of Cleveland’s locker room leaders.

During an appearance on Up & Adams, offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas was asked by Kay Adams about a report suggesting that Browns veterans wanted Joe Flacco to take the reins. Lucas, while initially dodging the direct reference, offered a response that revealed more than it concealed.

“I haven’t seen the report,” Lucas said. “I feel like, as a vet, I want whoever’s best. That could be Flacco… could be the other two rookies. That could be Deshaun Watson.” He didn’t shut the door on any of them, but the casual inclusion of Flacco’s name-paired with a pause before referencing Watson-hinted at a growing respect for Flacco’s steady presence.

Lucas then offered a veteran’s perspective on how early it still is in the process.

“We’re so early within the year… OTAs were just a good starting point to get to know all four of them. We haven’t taken any really meaningful snaps yet,” he added.

Meanwhile, outside the building, the calls for a rookie revolution are getting louder. On the Ultimate 216 Show, former NFL wide receiver Cecil Shorts issued a passionate challenge to Stefanski. “Stefanski, you’re supposed to be the guru,” Shorts said. “Prove it. Pick one and develop him throughout the year.”

For many, that “one” is clearly Shedeur Sanders, the ultra-talented and media-savvy son of Coach Prime, whose potential ceiling might be the highest of the bunch.
