Browns make unexpected move, target NFC candidates for new Head Coach for Shedeur Sanders

For the 2020 season, Kevin Stefanski arrived in Cleveland and proved to be a major acquisition. In his first season, he led the team to an 11-5 record, reached the playoffs, and secured the Browns’ first postseason win since 1994, earning him his first NFL Coach of the Year award. That team was led by Baker Mayfield, who would leave the team the following year-a move that may have contributed to the team’s later struggles.

In addition to 2020, Stefanski shone again in 2023, when the Browns finished 11-6, returned to the playoffs, and Stefanski earned his second Coach of the Year award (the first was in 2020), a rare achievement in the NFL. Overall, Cleveland made two playoff appearances under his leadership, marking arguably the best period for the Browns since their return to Cleveland in 1999.

The 2024 (3-14) and 2025 (5-12) seasons represented a sharp decline, influenced by quarterback instability and key injuries, particularly following the failed gamble on Deshaun Watson. Stefanski’s tenure with the Browns officially ended after the 2025 season, but all signs indicate he could become a head coach elsewhere in 2026.

Browns seek key Rams staffer for Head Coach position

After the Stefanski era-which, despite everything, was undoubtedly positive-the Cleveland Browns are searching for a new head coach. While it is clear that the team is interested in John Harbaugh, several media outlets reported this Sunday that the Browns have requested an interview with Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase for the open head coach position.

Scheelhaase, 35, is in his second season running the Rams’ offense, which led the NFL in points scored and features Matthew Stafford, this season’s favorite for MVP. Stafford led the NFL with 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdowns this season. As a result, Scheelhaase has positioned himself as one of the top candidates to become a head coach in 2026.

So far, the Browns have also interviewed Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher, and Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde. They have additionally interviewed their own coordinators, Tommy Rees (offense) and Jim Schwartz (defense).

Cleveland’s defense is strong, and their 2025 rookie class was outstanding. However, the offense still has a lot of work to do, especially in determining who will be their quarterback. This may lead the Browns to prioritize a head coach with an offensive mindset.
