Brooks Koepka has reached one of the lowest points of his career after admitting he needs to “completely reevaluate everything” following a miserable return season on the PGA Tour.
Koepka finished tied for 67th at the Wyndham Championship after shooting three under for the week, leaving him projected 94th in the FedExCup standings and outside the top 70 who advance to the playoffs.
The five-time major champion didn’t attempt to disguise his frustration.
“Yeah, pretty disappointed,” Koepka said. “I think it’s pretty pathetic that I can’t get through [to the FedEx Cup playoffs]. Zero top-10s basically in two years.”
“To be in the prime of your career and be as good as I think I am, I think that’s very pathetic, disappointing. Just need to go home and completely reevaluate everything.”
Koepka admits his confidence has disappeared
The biggest problem, in Koepka’s view, isn’t his long game.
“Ball-struck it great,” he said of his performance at the Wyndham Championship. “It’s just all on the greens. I don’t know what the deal is. [I’ve] got zero confidence [and] can’t putt. I don’t know. There’s going to be a lot of changes here soon.”
Those comments underline just how frustrated Koepka has become after returning to the PGA Tour following his spell with LIV Golf.
He made 11 cuts in 16 starts this season, but his results never matched the expectations attached to a player with five major championships.
What comes next for Koepka?
Koepka hasn’t suggested he’s ready to walk away from golf altogether. In fact, he said he has enjoyed being back on the PGA Tour despite the poor results.
“It’s been great,” Koepka said. “Honestly, I’ve loved it. I feel fantastic. The reception’s been great. Overall, happiness is 10 out of 10 and just excited.”
But something clearly has to change.
Koepka is expected to consider playing DP World Tour events in Europe while also looking toward the PGA Tour’s fall schedule.
His future isn’t suddenly in doubt, but his own words make clear that the version of Koepka seen this season isn’t one he’s willing to accept.
