Brook Lopez explains why he turned his back on LeBron James and Stephen Curry

Brook Lopez is set to begin a new chapter in his career with a new team. After seven seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, the 37-year-old center will return to Los Angeles, though this time, it won’t be with the Lakers. Lopez is joining the L.A. Clippers, marking his second stint with a team from the city as he looks to bring veteran experience and rim protection to their frontcourt.

The market of center players in the NBA during the free agency window was not as promising as last year; this time, there weren’t any big surprises. However, some of the trades deserve all the attention, as one of Lopez, who took advantage of this period and joined a new team that will lead him to a new, promising season.

What would be Brook’s new role at the Clippers?

Brook Lopez has had a spectacular career in the NBA, gaining the confidence of all the franchises that he played for, as he was one of the main players of each team. Now at the Clippers, he will have a big challenge: deliver high performances with the team; therefore, he can be seen as the starter player of the team.

Lopez joins the Clippers fully aware that Ivica Zubac will remain the team’s starting center, with Lopez expected to play a supporting role. Still, he had high praise for his new teammate during Summer League interviews. “He’s continued to grow each and every season. The sky is still the limit for him. There’s so much more he can do, so much more he’s capable of,” Lopez said.

In addition, Lopez expressed confidence in his on-court chemistry with fellow big man Ivica Zubac, noting that their styles should mesh well. “I think we complement each other extremely well. Obviously, we’ll be very big. I think we can be great defensively, just dominating the paint. Offensively, we complement each other there as well. I’ll spread the floor for him, give him all the room in the paint to go wild,” Lopez said.

Why did he turn back to James and Curry?

Before signing with the L.A. Clippers, Brook Lopez had multiple offers on the table, many of which would have positioned him as a key contributor. His decision to leave the Milwaukee Bucks, however, was entirely personal. Lopez expressed a desire for change in his life and the opportunity to take on new challenges at this stage of his career.

Among the many options Lopez considered, a few stood out as particularly high-profile. He reportedly received an offer to return to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he could have teamed up with Luka Doncic, and possibly LeBron James. Another strong possibility was a move to the Golden State Warriors, where he would have joined a title-hungry roster led by Stephen Curry in pursuit of another championship run.

Brooks delivered an outstanding season with the Milwaukee Bucks, appearing in an impressive 80 games while averaging 13 points, 5 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, and shooting 37.3% from three-point range.
