Brittany Mahomes had every reason to smile this week. In a video shared on Instagram, her one-year-old son Bronze proudly said his full name-Patrick Mahomes III-while holding up three tiny fingers. It was a heartwarming moment for the Mahomes family, but it also carried weight far beyond the cuteness.
That’s because just months ago, that same little boy gave Brittany one of the biggest scares of her life.
Back in October, Bronze had a severe allergic reaction after trying peanuts for the first time. Brittany had added a bit of peanut powder to his bottle-something many parents do to introduce allergens early-but within 30 minutes, he was covered in hives. “He became really fussy and irritable,”she said. “Then I saw welts everywhere. It was terrifying.”
Even with emergency medicine on hand, the situation escalated quickly. Brittany rushed him to the hospital, where doctors stabilized him. Since then, food safety in the Mahomes household has become a top priority.
A promising patch could change how peanut allergies are treated
This week, Brittany Mahomes gave fans a glimpse of hope on Instagram. She shared a post from Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) about a new peanut allergy treatment that’s gaining traction with the FDA. The therapy, called Viaskin, is a skin patch developed by DBV Technologies. It uses a technique known as epicutaneous immunotherapy (EPIT) to slowly build tolerance to peanuts through the skin.
Trials are still underway, but FARE reports that results are promising-and the FDA could review the treatment later this year.
For Brittany, this isn’t just interesting news-it’s personal. She and plant-based drink company OWYN partnered in 2023 to make a six-figure matching donation to FARE.“This campaign is for the 85 million Americans impacted by food allergies and intolerances,” she told People Magazine. “We want to support research, education, and advocacy that actually improves lives.”
Brittany’s daughter Sterling, now four, also has multiple food allergies-including peanuts-so the Mahomes family has been navigating these challenges for a while. But Bronze’s reaction last year brought it all into sharper focus.
“Seeing him in distress like that was awful,”Brittany recalled. “You never forget that feeling.”
Now, with a breakthrough potentially on the horizon, there’s reason for hope. And for Brittany, that’s something worth celebrating-and sharing.
