The much-hyped boxing match between Patrick Mahomes Sr. and former MLB pitcher John Rocker has been officially called off, and Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy is pointing fingers at Brittany Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s representatives for shutting it down.
During an appearance on The Unnamed Show on Friday, Portnoy claimed that the fight, originally set to take place in April under his Rough N Rowdy promotion, was canceled after Mahomes‘ team intervened.
“Mahomes‘ agent, the football player, and Brittany, from what I am told, intervened and were like, ‘There’s no way this fight’s happening,'” Portnoy alleged. “‘We’re going to cut this guy off if he does it.'”
According to court filings obtained by TMZ Sports, Mahomes Sr. had officially signed a contract for the fight on January 17, agreeing to face Rocker in exchange for a guaranteed minimum payout of $85,000.
To generate excitement, the two even staged a heated altercation on Bourbon Street during Super Bowl LIX week in early February.
However, despite both men appearing eager to step into the ring, Mahomes Sr. ultimately backed out following pressure from his son’s camp.
Portnoy Frustrated Over Sudden Cancellation
Portnoy made it clear that the idea for the fight came directly from Mahomes Sr. and Rocker, making the abrupt cancellation all the more frustrating for him.
“They came to us to do this,” he stated. “How would we ever come up with this concept? Like, ‘Oh, let’s put John Rocker vs. Pat Mahomes Sr.’ Like, who would ever think of that?”
“They came to us and said they hated each other and wanted to fight.”
Neither Mahomes Sr. nor Rocker has publicly addressed the cancellation yet, but given Rocker‘s history of vocal social media activity, a response may be forthcoming.
