Brian Schottenheimer reveals his feelings on George Pickens after TNF controversy

When the Dallas Cowboys traded for wide receiver George Pickens, the move was greeted with a mix of excitement and curiosity across the league.

Dallas needed a dynamic perimeter threat to complement CeeDee Lamb, and Pickens brought exactly that: size, explosiveness, and the ability to transform routine plays into game-changing moments.

For quarterback Dak Prescott, whose MVP-level stretch has coincided with Pickens‘ arrival, the partnership has been transformative. The Cowboys have surged forward in the NFC Wild Card race, leaning heavily on an offense that has regained its vertical identity.

But as electric as Pickens has been, questions about his consistency and demeanor have followed him from Pittsburgh to Dallas. His tenure with the Steelers was marked by highlight-reel catches overshadowed at times by sideline frustrations and lapses in effort.

The Cowboys were well aware of the dual-sided nature of his game when they acquired him, betting that their veteran locker room and player-focused coaching staff could channel his talent in the right direction.

Those concerns resurfaced in the Cowboys‘ Week 14 loss to the Detroit Lions, where Pickens‘ effort on several plays became a talking point among analysts and fans. On a night when nearly the entire team struggled, Pickens‘ body language drew additional scrutiny, particularly given his history.

Still, inside the building, head coach Brian Schottenheimer isn’t sounding any alarms.

Cowboys Confident They Can Keep Pickens on Track

“We talked a little about it,” Schottenheimer told reporters after the game. “In his words, he goes, ‘Hey, Schotty, I didn’t play my best game.’ Unfortunately, none of us played our best game. That’s real. But I don’t worry about George and his love for football and playing this game.”

Schottenheimer‘s confidence isn’t blind loyalty. Dallas has already held Pickens accountable once this season, benching him briefly in Week 11 for a curfew violation.

It was a clear message that talent alone isn’t enough, even for a player performing at an All-Pro level. Many around the league noted that the Cowboys‘ approach mirrors how other teams have handled gifted but volatile receivers, from Tyreek Hill early in his career to Brandon Marshall during his time under veteran coaches.

Accountability paired with support has proven to work, and Dallas is attempting to strike the same balance.

On the field, Pickens has been everything the Cowboys hoped for and more. Through 13 games, he has hauled in 78 receptions for 1,179 yards and eight touchdowns.

He ranks among the NFL’s most productive wideouts this season, offering Dallas a physical downfield option that forces defenses to adjust their coverage schemes.

Analysts have noted that Prescott‘s improved efficiency on deep throws is directly tied to Pickens‘ ability to win contested catches and stretch the boundary.

Yet the stakes are high. Pickens is heading into free agency, putting him in prime position for a major payday if he maintains both elite production and professional consistency.

The Cowboys need him locked in as they push toward the postseason, and Pickens needs the same focus to secure the contract that his talent warrants.

For Dallas, the reward has always outweighed the risk. Now, as the season tightens, Pickens has the chance to prove he’s more than a boom-or-bust personality – he can be a cornerstone player for a franchise with championship aspirations.
