A new theory has emerged aboutBrett Gardner’s tragedy in Costa Rica, in which his son Miller died. A forensic doctor has explained why the New York Yankees legend and the rest of the family members were able to escape the same fate.

After the Costa Rican authorities confirmed that thecause of death of the 14-year-old was carbon monoxide poisoning, Dr. Maikel Vargas-Sanabria, a professor at the University of Costa Rica, explained to US Weekly why the rest of the family did not also succumb to poisoning at the Arenas del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort.

The location of the room

The forensic pathologist said that there are several factors why Miller died, but not the rest of the family, and this would be directly related to the proximity of his room to the engine room where the emissions of the lethal gas occurred.

Miller and the rest of the Gardners, including the former baseball player, his wife Jessica and their son, Hunter, had suffered stomach pains, vomiting and diarrhea after dining at a restaurant the night before the tragedy, but it is unknown whether this event and the one that claimed Miller’s life are related in any way.

According to the forensic scientist’s theory, who is not directly related to the case, it is possible that, as carbon monoxide is a gas that tends to accumulate in the lower parts of a room, Miller’s death could have occurred because of the time he remained in the place.

Susceptibility to carbon monoxide

“Several factors can affect a person’s sensitivity to carbon monoxide in a room,” Vargas-Sanabria said. “It makes much more sense that if there was a leak, the carbon monoxide could have entered his room and filled it completely, causing his death,” he added, noting the proximity of Miller’s room to the engine room

Vargas-Sanabria also said that some people may be more susceptible than others to monoxide for certain reasons, such as their levels of hemoglobin in the blood.

The Gardner family case is closed and what follows for the Yankees legend is for them to be allowed to move Miller’s body back to the United States to say goodbye with a private ceremony, reserved for family and close friends.
