Breanna Stewart’s return couldn’t prevent Liberty from setting an unfortunate record

After missing 13 games due to a bone bruise in her right knee, Breanna Stewart returned to the court with the New York Liberty.

It was a dream night. The team added another victory after beating the Connecticut Sun 81-79, bringing their record to 23-15. However, they also set a record that no team wants to have.

Injuries played a trick on the team

During the game, Stewart showed her talent: in 21 minutes of action, she scored 19 points, establishing herself as the Liberty’s top scorer of the night. She also added five rebounds.

Despite this, the team has not been immune to injuries this year, and Breanna is just one of them. During this season, the New York team has also seen Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones go down. The three stars have missed a total of 27 games.

This has led to constant changes in Liberty’s roster. In fact, against the Sun, the formation changed again. With Stewart’s return and Natasha Cloud out with a broken nose, Kennedy Burke took the court while Emma Meesseman remained on the bench.

This combination led to an unexpected record, being the 14th change in 38 games, the most changes to the starting roster in franchise history, as confirmed by Madeline Kenney of the New York Post.

Despite this, the team has shown resilience, not only in their victory over Connecticut, but throughout the season, supporting their teammates and seeking to improve the team’s record. They are currently in fifth position in the WNBA standings, securing their place in the playoffs.

Now, they are preparing to face the Washington Mystics on Thursday, August 28, at the Barclays Center.
