Since Tom Brady finally walked away from the game in 2022, the NFL has transitioned into a high-octane era defined by elite mobility and arm talent. The league is now firmly in the hands of the “new guard,” with superstars like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Lamar Jackson dictating the pace.
While veterans like Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson have found it difficult to maintain their Hall of Fame standards lately, the 38-year-old Matthew Stafford has been the exception, currently playing some of the best football of his life as the reigning NFL MVP.
The pressure is mounting from below, too. The 2024 NFL Draft class has already made its mark, with Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, and Drake Maye all incredibly reaching a Conference Championship within their first two seasons. However, despite the influx of young talent, the statistical mountain of the 2020s still has a very specific peak.
Decade of Dominance: Patrick Mahomes and the High-Voltage Offense
Since the turn of the decade, we’ve seen five different champions and five different MVPs, but the Kansas City Chiefs remain the undisputed NFL dynasty. A massive reason for their two Super Bowl rings and four appearances in this decade is Patrick Mahomes, who has become the statistical gold standard.
Mahomes currently leads the 2020s in both passing Yards (26,527) and passing TDs (191). He’s closely pursued by Jared Goff and Josh Allen, with Goff racking up 25,404 yards and Allen trailing just behind Mahomes with 190 touchdowns.
Interestingly, the “gunslinger” mentality comes with a cost. Josh Allen leads the decade in a category he’d likely rather forget: interceptions, with 73, followed by Mahomes at 67. Despite the turnovers, the offensive production across the board has been historic.
2020s Offensive Stat Leaders:
- Rushing Yards: Derrick Henry (9,185)
- Rushing TDs: Derrick Henry (84)
- Receptions: Davante Adams (586)
- Receiving Yards: Justin Jefferson (8,480)
- Receiving TDs: Davante Adams (73)
The No-Fly Zone: Defensive Wrecking Crews of the 2020s
While the quarterbacks grab the headlines, the defensive side of the ball has been dominated by generational disruptors. Myles Garrett has solidified his case as one of the best to ever do it, winning two Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) awards this decade.
Garrett leads all players with 95 sacks, a total bolstered by his record-shattering 23-sack campaign last season. He is currently tied with the relentless Maxx Crosby for the lead in Tackles for Loss at 117.
In the secondary, the ball hawks have been just as busy. Justin Simmons has proven to be a nightmare for opposing coordinators, leading the decade in takeaways with 24. He shares the lead in total interceptions with the lockdown Jessie Bates. Even with the game slanted toward offensive scoring, these defensive anchors have found ways to put points on the board themselves.
2020s Defensive Stat Leaders:
- Total Tackles: Bobby Wagner (925)
- Forced Fumbles: T.J. Watt (21)
- Interceptions: Jessie Bates / Justin Simmons (21)
- Passes Defensed: Denzel Ward (82)
- Defensive TDs: DaRon Bland (6)
As we move deeper into the 2026 season, these benchmarks will only get harder to reach. With the 2024 rookie class now entering their prime, the race to catch Mahomes and Garrett is officially on.
