Brandon Aiyuk’s return: 49ers eye mid-season comeback around week 6

San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, sidelined since tearing his ACL and MCL in week 7 of last year, is being eyed for a comeback mid-season. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has indicated that Aiyuk could be ready to take the field by week 6.

This would mean that the WR would be suiting up for the October 12 matchup against the Buccaneers, tough Shanahan cautions that the timeline remains fluid. The evaluation continues through training camp and the early preseason games. While optimism is growing, patience remains essential. At least for now, his wife Rochell Searight can enjoy making him company during rehab.

What we know about Aiyuk’s recovery timeline

Aiyuk missed a significant portion of the 2024 season due to serious knee injuries; tears to both the ACL and MCL sustained during a matchup with the Chiefs.

Entering the 2025 preseason, he was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and his progress has been closely monitored throughout offseason workouts. Coach Shanahan now suggest that a return around week 6 is the target, while acknowledging that this could shift based on Aiyuk’s healing and conditioning.

Implications for the 49ers’ offense and roster depth

Aiyuk’s potential return injects hope into a 49ers receiving corps already dealing with multiple setbacks. With rookie Jordan Watkins sidelined for about a month due to an ankle sprain, and veteran Jauan jennings recovering from a calf issue, the team’s passing game depth is thin.

Aiyuk’s return would not only bring a top-tier playmaker back into the fold, but could also alleviate pressure on other receivers like Ricky Pearsall, Russell Gage, and Jacob Cowing. Moreover, the normalization of his return timeline matters for both on-field strategy and fantasy football planning, where managers must weigh his uncertain midseason comeback.
