Canelo Alvarez not only lost his world crowns when he was defeated by Terence Crawford in front of more than 70,000 spectators at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, but his prestige and credibility is being vilified by various sectors.
If the last to come out to ‘hit’ Canelo were the members of Crawford’s team, who said that it was not worth requesting a rematch because they were going to knock him out, now it is the turn of one of the great legends of boxing such as Roy Jones Jr.
The former world champion in the middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions was categorical against the fighter born in Jalisco, asking him to leave the gloves in a corner and devote himself to something else.
The American used his Instagram account to be clear about the future of Canelo and make a recommendation: “Better finish your career.”
Despite losing to Crawford, Canelo does not have retirement in mind at this time, as he still has a contract for two more fights, one of them against David Benavidez, which was the reason for Roy Jones’ comment.
“To beat Benavidez you need to be extraordinarily hungry, press him from round 1 to 12. If you’re not hungry enough, just don’t waste your time, just end your career,” the former world champion said on his social network.
Another warning from Jones Jr. to Canelo has to do with his next fight: “It’s probably not a good fight right now, especially after the loss to Terence Crawford.”
This is not the first time Roy Jones Jr. has commented on Canelo’s career, as he has previously commented on one of his major flaws. “The only thing I don’t like is that he has a lot of habit of slapping with the left hook,” he said a few years ago on Shawn Porter’s podcast.
