Boston Celtics lock down key franchise asset ahead of training camp

The Boston Celtics confirmed on Friday that head coach Joe Mazzulla has signed a multi-year contract extension, a move that ensures stability with fewer than eight weeks before training camp begins.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the decision underscores the organization’s confidence in the 37-year-old’s leadership during one of the most turbulent offseasons in recent memory.

Boston‘s summer has been defined less by building toward another title and more by dismantling their 2024 championship roster, due to the NBA’s luxury tax penalties ultimately forcing a significant payroll reduction.

As a result, Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis and Luke Kornet have all had to leave, whilst Al Horford is expected to follow. For extra measure, Jayson Tatum is also out injured for the entire next season after tearing his Achilles tendon.

“We have signed Joe Mazzulla to a multi-year contract extension,” the Celtics announced via X.com, formerly Twitter, ensuring stability on the sidelines at a sensitive time for the franchise.

Despite the roster losses, Mazzulla‘s track record has been a rare constant as since taking over he has guided the team to a 182-64 record, and his .740 career winning percentage currently stands as the best in the league.

Joe was just 34 when he assumed the role, a rapid promotion few expected to succeed. However, his ability to manage star talent, adapt strategy, and maintain strong regular-season performance has subverted all expectations.

“This is truly a blessing. I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children,” Mazzulla officially said in a statement.

“We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, Brad’s mentorship, and the support of our staff.

“Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston.”

The contract extension comes just days before the franchise is set to finalize its sale, signaling a deliberate choice to secure coaching leadership before any change in ownership.

While Mazzulla‘s future is settled, Boston continues to shape its retooled roster as their rookie guard, Max Shulga, has signed a one-year two-way contract in late July.

Acquired in a draft-night trade with the Orlando Magic, the deal length stands out, most comparable second-round selections have received two-year two-way agreements.

According to Hoops Rumors, the Celtics‘ decision may be strategic, allowing flexibility in what is expected to be a transitional season and he now has the opportunity to earn a role during training camp and preseason.

With injuries already thinning the rotation, including the year-long absence of Tatum, depth at the guard position could prove critical and opens the door for the 57th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
