Bo Nix tips Troy Franklin to be a big hit at the Denver Broncos as the star quarterback gives the wide receiver out of the Oregon Ducks program his full support.
During Friday’s Denver Broncos training camp on July 25, the star of the team, who also played for Oregon, made a deliberate effort to spotlight his college teammate as he arrives in Colorado.
The move didn’t go unnoticed and may actually play a critical role in Franklin‘s fight to secure a spot on the 53-man roster as the 2024 NFL Draft fourth-round pick looks to establish himself among a crowded and competitive depth chart.
Whilst Courtland Sutton is at the forefront of the WR corps, there are options for the younger generation behind and that surplus of personnel means Franklin‘s window to impress is narrow.
That’s why Friday’s session stood out as Bo targeted Troy repeatedly, re-establishing the chemistry they once shared at the University of Oregon, and according to observers, the familiarity created some of the day’s most polished offensive sequences.
With Nix delivering passes with accuracy and confidence, and Franklin responding with consistency in his routes and hands, it seems as though it has already caught the eye of the team’s head coach.
“We just started,” Sean Payton said when asked about Franklin‘s development. “But do I think he has a chance to?
“I felt like we began to see that towards the latter part of last season. So I’m looking forward to seeing him … he’s had a real good offseason.”
Nix‘s deep understanding of Franklin‘s play style, including his timing, speed, and ability to adjust in coverage, puts the second-year player in a favorable position as training camp progresses.
Now it’s up to see if the youngster can not only make the roster, and with with many wideouts competing for limited roles, the ability to execute in real-time situations often becomes the deciding factor.
Nix is clearly doing his part to make sure Franklin gets every opportunity to deliver and having a quarterback who trusts him and actively seeks him out can mean the difference between staying in Denver or becoming a free agent.
Is J.K. Dobbins set to be cut from the Denver Broncos?
Meanwhile, discussions surrounding other roster possibilities are also stirring headlines as the former Broncos running back, Phillip Lindsay, offered his own surprising prediction.
He is naming free-agent acquisition J.K. Dobbins as a potential camp cut on his show “The Drive”, despite the RB only just arriving at the Empower Field after departing the Los Angeles Chargers.
“Say that he gets into camp, and he gets hurt,”: Lindsay said. “It’s like, ‘Hey, let’s just stick with the young guys and they’re cheap.'”
Injuries do remain a concern as since entering the NFL, Dobbins has missed nearly half of all possible games due to serious knee and Achilles injuries. Now with the Broncos, he must prove his durability in a crowded backfield to secure a roster spot.
However, he did show flashes of his potential in 2024, rushing for 905 yards and 9 touchdowns in 13 games with the Chargers. He also added 153 receiving yards on 32 catches. So he does have value to offer to the team.
