The Buffalo Bills, for the first time since 2017, are looking for a new head coach. When Sean McDermott was hired by the Bills, the general manager in place was Doug Whaley. But only a few months after McDermott joining, Whaley was fired. In his place entered Brandon Beane, who spent time with McDermott as part of the Carolina Panthers in previous years.
Together, McDermott and Beane crafted a winning formula. With a lot of help from Josh Allen, the Bills won nine or more games in eight of nine seasons under McDermott. But the lack of a Super Bowl appearance was his undoing. Beane, despite what many believe is a mediocre roster he put together in 2025, earned a promotion right after firing McDermott early this week. Now, Beane will be able to hand-pick a head coach.
Ideally, the head coach would come in and help Allen get back to MVP form. The quarterback took a bit of a step back in 2025, although it was clear that many of his issues were exacerbated due to a weak wide receiver room, which Beane constructed. Yet, despite Allen’s relatively down season, the coach who guided the QB all year could very well be the team’s next head coach.
Joe Brady considered a serious candidate for Bills head coach job
Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady is expected to get “a real look” for Buffalo’s head coach job. Brady has been Allen’s offensive coordinator since midway through the 2023 season, and was the team’s quarterbacks coach in 2022.
Brady has already interviewed with other teams for their head coach openings. While fans don’t always love his playcalling, Brady is highly regarded around the league. Given that he knows Allen very well and the two seem to have a strong relationship, Brady is a logical candidate.
Despite Brady being a strong option in the eyes of football executives, Bills fans don’t quite understand the potential decision. Brady was a part of McDermott’s staff and had his own flaws. The general sentiment among Bills Mafia is that it would be pointlessto fire McDermott then hire someone from his staff.
