Bill Simmons’ wildest conspiracy yet involves Luka Doncic, Las Vegas and a secret team

The NBA doesn’t usually do subtle when it comes to blockbuster trades, but theLuka Doncic deal? That one came out of nowhere. When ESPN’s Shams Charania dropped the news that the Dallas Mavericks had sent their franchise player to the Los Angeles Lakers, the internet collectively froze. Had he been hacked? Was this some kind of social experiment? Nope- Luka Doncic was really heading to L.A., and the Mavericks were bringing in Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick.

The return raised eyebrows. Dallas had just traded one of the league’s top-five players for a package that, while solid, didn’t exactly scream “fair deal.” Sure, Davis is an elite two-way player, but giving up Doncic, who nearly dragged the Mavs to a championship last season, for a package light on future assets felt like a move that needed an explanation. Enter Bill Simmons, who has one-and it’s got nothing to do with basketball.

On The Bill Simmons Podcast, the longtime NBA analyst floated a theory that sent fans into a rabbit hole: What if this trade was really about getting the Mavericks out of Dallas? More specifically, what if this was the first domino in a long-term play to move the team to Las Vegas? “The [NBA] owners have always wanted the Vegas team, and their eventual goal is to basically flip franchises,” Simmons said.“Move Dallas to Vegas so they can have their whole casino thing.”

It sounds out there, but consider the context. The Mavericks’ new majority owner, Miriam Adelson, is deeply tied to the casino industry. Some believe that this deal could be a way to leverage pressure on Texas lawmakers to legalize sports betting. If they don’t? Well, Vegas is right there, waiting with open arms and neon lights.

Mavs fans call bluff, but the Vegas noise won’t go away anytime soon

Of course, Mavericks fans aren’t buying it. The franchise has been in Dallas since 1980, and despite the occasional relocation rumors, there’s been no real indication that Mark Cuban’s sale of the team was about moving it elsewhere. Still, Simmons doubling down on the Vegas idea has stirred up enough noise that it’s become the most bizarre subplot of this already insane trade.

Meanwhile, Doncic is gearing up to make his Lakers debut, where he’ll join forces with LeBron James-an on-court pairing that would have seemed impossible just days ago. In Dallas, the Mavs are scrambling to prove that their bet on Davis can keep them competitive.

Whether the conspiracy holds any weight or not, one thing is certain: this trade isn’t just about basketball. It’s about power, influence, and maybe-just maybe-a long game that involves Vegas rolling the dice on an NBA franchise.
