Who would’ve thought – right now, the Cleveland Browns are the team with the most spotlight on them, perhaps alongside the Dallas Cowboys due to the Micah Parsons situation. However, in Cleveland, there’s an ongoing battle for the starting quarterback position, one that seems likely to be won by Joe Flacco, who is entering his 18th NFL season.
At the moment, there are six quarterbacks on the Cleveland Browns’ roster – yes, believe it or not. The most talked about have been Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. This week, Tyler Huntley was also signed, and let’s not forget Deshaun Watson, who still has two years left on his contract but is currently injured.
Watson is on the PUP list and could return to practice around October. That leaves Joe Flacco – who has experience in Kevin Stefanski’s system after winning 4 of 5 games with the team in 2023 – as the frontrunner to be the Week 1 starter against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Adam Schefter believes the Browns will keep four quarterbacks
The quarterback signed this week, Tyler Huntley, is unlikely to stick around long-term. He arrived due to injuries to Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel, both of whom have now returned to practice – although neither will play Friday against the Carolina Panthers.
There’s been talk that it would be very difficult to keep four quarterbacks. Typically, teams keep two on the active roster and one on the practice squad. However, NFL insider Adam Schefter believes there’s a real chance that all four quarterbacks remain on the Browns’ 53-man roster – at least to start the season.
“I actually now think the Browns are more likely than not to carry four quarterbacks on their final 53-man roster. I think both rookie quarterbacks will be on the Browns’ final roster,” said Schefter. “Joe Flacco, right now, appears to be the man in the lead before the preseason games to be the Browns’ starting quarterback,” he added.
For now, Shedeur Sanders will have a golden opportunity – he will be the starting quarterback for the Browns in the game against the Panthers. However, he’ll be playing without key weapons and will face Carolina’s starting defense.
