David Ortiz, better known as “Big Papi”, revived the eternal rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, but this time from an analysis studio. During the live broadcast after Game 4 of the MLB Division Series, where the Toronto Blue Jays eliminated the Yankees, Ortiz mocked two Bronx legends such as Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.

The moment went viral when Big Papi, laughing with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who was celebrating with his team their qualification to the Championship Series, began to repeat mockingly: “Daaaaa Yankees lose”, in reference to the traditional call of the announcer John Sterling after the victories of the Bronx team, but now with the modification to “lose”. Meanwhile, Jeter and A-Rod kept a serious face, visibly uncomfortable, not hiding their frustration at their former team’s elimination.

Big Papi and his omen from Game 3 of the Yankees vs Blue Jays Division Series

Ortiz had already warmed up the atmosphere before Game 3 of the series, when the Yankees were down 0-2 against Toronto. In a defiant tone, he uttered one of the most quoted phrases of the postseason in which he showed his full confidence in the Canadian team:

They could bring Jesus back and they’d still go to Cancun. It’s over. It’s over. Just so you know, this Toronto Blue Jays lineup doesn’t mess around

And he was not wrong, the Blue Jays sentenced the series 3-1 with a resounding victory at Yankee Stadium and Big Papi returned to the attack with a smile, accompanied by Guerrero Jr. one of the key figures in Toronto’s qualification. The scene became fuel for social networks, where Boston fans celebrated the fall of their arch-rival.

Yankees eliminated and the Bronx burning from a 16-year drought

The Yankees’ elimination not only sparked internal criticism of the team’s management, but also opened the door for historic voices such as Big Papi to strike again from the media. The fact that he did so in front of Jeter and Rodriguez, two icons of the franchise, only amplified the impact of the moment.

While New York reflects on another October disappointment, Ortiz seems to be enjoying the moment, this time as a commentator, keeping one of the sport’s most intense rivalries alive. The taunt not only hurt because of the moment, but also because it came from someone who historically knew how to hurt them and now does so from the microphones.
