Beterbiev downplays Benavidez’s KO of Yarde: ‘Nothing new’ in light heavyweight division

David Benavidez has achieved a new victory in the 175 pounds where he retained his WBA and WBC championships with an impressive knockout of Anthony Yarde in the seventh round during the event held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The fight began with both boxers analyzing each other, but little by little ‘The Mexican Monster’ began to impose the pace of the fight with his combinations of punches and pressure where he took full advantage of his speed to dominate Yarde, who could barely respond to the champion’s blows.

It was during Round 7 that David Benavidez put the finishing touch to take the victory by KO and thus take another step in his quest to face the best boxers in the light heavyweight category such as Dmitry Bivol, Canelo Alvarez or Artur Beterbiev, who quickly gave his impressions of the fight.

Artur Beterbiev minimizes David Benavidez vs Anthony Yarde fight

Despite David Benavidez’s resounding KO victory, Artur Beterbiev showed indifference to the result and through his social networks pointed out that the victory of ‘The Mexican Monster’ over Yarde “is nothing new” in the category.

The Russian fighter said he watched the fight, but was not impressed by the performance of both boxers. “We could have something better, couldn’t we?” making it clear that he did not like the performance offered by the pugilists and there could be other more interesting fights.

What are the next challenges for David Benavidez?

David Benavidez already has a date for his next fight, where he will face Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez on May 2, 2026 in Las Vegas. However, this choice of opponent has generated criticism and questions from boxing analysts because Gilberto has not shown consistency in his last fights, but also the expectation that there was of a possible fight against Jai Opetaia or that it was against some other boxer of more renown and history in the light heavyweight division

Meanwhile, Artur Beterbiev is still focused on his trilogy with Dmitry Bivol, a fight that is expected to take place during the first three months of 2026, after the Russian is 100% physically fit following his back surgery. However, recent statements about Benavidez the fans gave him the reason and took advantage of the space to tag Bivol and his team to make one more fight and agree as soon as possible.
